Memorial Day Hike

Yesterday we took a family trip down I-24 East to Short Springs State Natural Area. It was really lovely: a hot hike rewarded by the cool spray of a waterfall.

I spent a lot of time hiking in the back complaining about the heat and the bugs.  But I also took some time just to watch the boys in their element.

Brian, the dutiful trip planner, always ready with necessities such as ropes, rocks that can stain your face, and of course his homemade chocolate chip cookies.

John, running wild, still thrilled by salamanders, the correct identification of maple leaves, and a bottle of Gatorade.
And SamB, content to ride piggyback like a little primate, listening for birds, and delighted by the splash of rocks in the creek.

Side note: Thursday is our ... are you ready? ... drumroll ...

TEN (10) YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!

Now THAT is something to celebrate considering how hard-headed, moody, and tempermental we both are.

I love days like this.
